In a world of fast deteriorating value-based societies, people today are no longer the kind and compassionate souls of yesteryears. They are fast changing into media clones with no compassion and goals that are only of a materialistic nature. In other words, the world is making a transition from a humane to a materialistic and selfish entity and in many ways, it is actually a backward movement for the human species in all.
Most people today are self-centred to make their career ambitions come true and are ready to sidestep any humane consideration for the sake of achieving just that. A lot of factors play into this and it is chiefly the media doings and societal pressure besides personal values that are fast evolving purely on the needs of oneself.
In the days gone by people used to be more tradition-bound and thus cared more for their fellow beings. Today they do not even care for their spouses and children. What use is then the material progress of mankind, if one may ask? It is here that the role of religious, educational, social and human institutions needs to be increased as they can all together play an important part in increasing the societal improvement by making people more courteous and helpful in general.
In a compassionless world, as more and more shrink in their worlds, each evening people should instead try and steal more time to know their neighbours and devote attention to the needs of the neighbourhood. Charity begins at home and should then head to places close by. Only by making a try, can we all bring that much-needed change around us?
It should be our effort to contribute to the society more than what the society gives us and this donation of our actions also called, "Karmadaan," in Sanskrit is an invaluable contribution as it is bereft of money has a greater value due to its leaning towards intent and action for a noble purpose.
It may be difficult for us to start something but if we have a resolution, it is sure that we can find happiness in trying to better the society we live in by being caring and giving. This is a sure way of making the world a better place than what we found it to be.
